Let’s face it, seeing the family for the holidays is nice, but whether you can really call it a vacation certainly depends on whom you ask. If you can cash in some saved vacation days, taking another trip post mistletoe and eggnog can be the best strategy for actually getting some R&R—and on the cheap. Prices generally drop back down after the bottleneck of holiday travel and deals are to be had everywhere.

If your family doesn’t already reside in the tropics, you probably can’t count on much sun so a trip to Mexico could be in order. Away from the tourist spots like Cancun, you can find amazing deals like $120 per night in an all-inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen. Plus, stay five nights or more and Travelocity will shave $150 off your bill. Family’s great but there’s really no replacement for frozen margaritas and parading beach bodies!

If you’re spoken for, there is really nothing better than a ski trip where you can warm up in front of a crackling chalet fireplace after a day on the slopes. Despite its stuffy reputation, Aspen is actually a very gay friendly destination with its own “Gay and Lesbian Ski Week” that annually draws about 5,000 visitors to its mountaintops. This year’s event is taking place from January 17-24 and don’t worry if you haven’t gained your ski legs—there are also boutique nights, pool parties and boys in abundance.

I was young, naive, and–perhaps most relevantly–freshly out of the closet. After a month-long road trip up to Washington and Canada, my then-girlfriend Amanda and I were hauling back down to our home turf in Los Angeles. We drove through thousands of miles of unknown, un-gay terrain. Amanda peeled the rainbow sticker off the bumper of her Saturn, and we both sunk low into our seats and tried to look less gay.

It was in this manner that the two of us rolled up to a quaint but otherwise nondescript town on the banks of Northern California’s Russian River. Needing a quick pick-me-up, we stopped at a café–and, lo and behold, we started seeing gay people. Lots of them. Everywhere. We saw multicolored rainbow flags, bear flags, and even risqué leather pride flags. Naughty, naughty, naughty! Where were we?

Turns out we had stumbled upon Guerneville, a gay-friendly vacation spot just 70 miles north of San Francisco. Although Amanda and I had no idea we were so close to the Bay Area (often lovingly, and somewhat appropriately, called the “Gay Area”), most San Franciscans, gay or not, are somewhat acquainted with the area. The Guerneville Visitor & Business Directory has an extensive “Gay Travel” section on their site, and you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender persuasion in San Francisco who hasn’t visited–or at least thought of visiting–this charming gay getaway at least once.

If you’re straight, though, never fear–Guerneville also serves up plenty of fun for everyone, regardless of your orientation. Things to do in or around Guerneville include hiking in the scenicArmstrong Redwoods State Reserve, whale watching, hot air ballooning, and visiting the Hallberg Butterfly Gardens. That’s if you’re not too busy swimming or kayaking in the river, checking out the local bars and cafés, or taking a leisurely stroll down Guerneville’s main street. Guerneville is also in Russian River Wine Country, so there are plenty of wine tasting opportunities in the area as well.

I’ll be heading out to Guerneville tonight to celebrate my anniversary with my partner, Julia. Seven years after my first Guerneville experience, I can’t think of a better way to say “I’m happy to be gay”!

Story by Jessica Tyler

Internationally, we’ve also got “gay” Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Amsterdam, Canada, and more. But tilt the globe in an entirely different direction, and the average lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) person might have no clue where to get their gay on.

Seeking outside-the-box destinations that are also easy on the dollar, many savvy American travelers have recently made Thailand their getaway of choice. What did you do, and where?
James: I went to Bangkok on business–it was great.
Mario: I was in Thailand for five weeks total. I volunteered for four weeks teaching English in a village in the Isaan province. I lived with a Thai family, and was able to travel during the weekends. For one week at the end I visited places like Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, Si Satchanalai, Phimai, Ayuthaya, and Bangkok. It was an amazing experience, to say the very least!

TWS: Did you go to any LGBT-friendly establishments?
James: Yes, in Bangkok. The area I went to was called Silom, which hosted two main streets, Soi 2 and Soi 4. It’s one of about four or so total gay areas in Bangkok. It was really easy to get around, because a lot of people speak English, and street signs are often in both English and Thai. It’s a very open city; everyone is really welcoming.
Mario: No, but Thailand in general tends to be very LGBT-friendly.

TWS: Were you “out” while you were there?
James: Not particularly, but I didn’t hide it.
Mario: I was not openly “out”–but that doesn’t mean people couldn’t figure it out on their own! The Thai, aside from being very friendly, tend to be very tolerant and respectful of others. I was never intimidated by the fact that they might suspect I was gay.

TWS: Did you notice other LGBT people? If so, how could you tell?
James: It’s hard to tell, especially as an outsider. The world is also changing–people are beginning to blend together and gay ghettos are becoming more disseminated.
Mario: Well, some of the boys tended to be very flamboyant. No questions there. Some transgender people were harder to identify, until I heard them speak.

TWS: Is safety an issue for LGBT people there? Did you or other “out” people feel safe, accepted, or comfortable?
James: Completely. I felt totally comfortable, and I felt like others did too.
Mario: Absolutely! From my experience, Thailand is way ahead of its time in terms of LGBT issues. The Western world has a lot to learn from them.

TWS: Did you notice any difference between LGBT culture in cities like Bangkok versus in more rural areas?
Mario: I, personally, did not. Before I went to Thailand, I read that you don’t necessarily find the same openness toward LGBT people in rural areas that you do in Bangkok or other large cities. However, that didn’t seem to be true in the village that I was living in. I saw teenage boys that left no doubt as to their sexuality, and they seemed very comfortable with themselves. Despite their flamboyance, even other, presumably heterosexual teenage boys seemed comfortable around them, too.

TWS: Do you feel that Western culture has had an impact on LGBT culture in Thailand?
James: The clubs and bars I went to in Bangkok were definitely Western-influenced. When you visit Mexico, you get a lot of Latin music in clubs and bars. But in Thailand, Western music, such as house music, is everywhere.
Mario: No, and I hope it never does. On the contrary, my hope is that Thailand will have more of an impact on Western cultures when it comes to sexuality. We’ve got a lot to learn.

TWS: Did you notice any difference between how gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, or transsexuals were treated?
James: I did see quite a few transgender people outside of gay areas. They seemed to be more evident, and possibly more accepted, than any other LGBT people I saw.
Mario: Looking back, gay men were a lot more noticeable–but I think that’s usually true in most places around the world. I occasionally did see transgender people, and they seemed well integrated, just as the gay men were.

TWS: Would you recommend Thailand as a destination for other LGBT travelers?
James: Absolutely! I loved Bangkok. The food is amazing, the hotels are phenomenal (especially Lebua and the Millennium Hilton), and you absolutely must take a ride in one of their water taxis. I would also definitely recommend traveling outside of Bangkok, since Thailand has so many beautiful beaches and Buddhist temples.
Mario: This goes without saying–yes! I would recommend Thailand to anyone and everyone! There is no other place like it.

Check out James’s photographs here, on his IgoUgo profile.

Hello chaps!

Guess who it is? Go on, guess! Oh alright then, I’ll tell you — it’s me, the Travelocity Roaming Gnome! I’m guest-posting on Gay Travelocity’s blog today. Hurrah! Can I get a round of applause? Anyone want to buy me a drink? Ooh, thank you, I’ll have a dirty martini. Maybe two.

So anyway, my dears, I wanted to pop in and remind you all that next weekend, June 27th and 28th, is Pride! Got your dancing shoes ready? All pumped up about the parades? I’ve got to say, I certainly am. I’m not sure whether New York or San Francisco has the more smashing celebration, but if I had my way, I’d go to both. Hmm, perhaps next year maybe I will. Nothing wrong with racking up the frequent flier miles, is there?

Make sure you get to a parade and celebrate if you can — who knows, you might even see me! Be sure to wave if you do. Maybe I’ll even let you stroke my beard.

Kisses for now!
The Travelocity Roaming Gnome

The weather was mood-setting, stormy and crazy, with lightning and thunder all around. As we all arrived at the event to get set up for the accompanying Gay DaysExpo, with this tumultuous weather, lo and behold the power went out. But turning lemons into lemonade, not only did we all have a great time hanging out poolside waiting for the power to come back on, but the folks putting on Gay Days (thanks Chris and Tommy) arranged for free hot dogs and burgers for everyone waiting. Suffice it to say, hanging out poolside with our friends from Bud Light was one of the highlights of the trip… one never knows where some of the best networking can be had!

Of course, the power came back and the event continued on without a hitch. The Expo itself was a success, as it is every year, since it’s one of the key GLBT events held in the US where people truly interact with those of us in the booths. Our fellow “booth mates” included IGLTA, the Grand Resort in Fort Lauderdale, Instinct Magazine, Centaur Music and a whole host of various GLBT and GLBT-friendly companies choosing this event as one of their top events to attend and exhibit at every year.

The poolside activities went on every day and into the evening, with various DJs entertaining us all along the way. Not only was Bud Light (and the new lemon Bud Light, which was my new favorite) flowing, but poolside our friends Sami and Peter of Pistol Pete Menswear were holding a fun “trade in your swimwear for some Pistol Pete swimwear for free” event which had hot boys going in and out of that poolside suite the entire weekend.

There were so many events going on this weekend it would make your head spin if you tried to attend them all. Between film release parties, lesbian comedians and bear events, there truly was something for everyone. As we were sponsors of One Mighty Weekend’s various events, we attended the House of Blues party on Thursday, the Luau on Friday and the big blowout party they held on Saturday night. For the girls, the Girls in Wonderland event was a huge hit, bringing together some of the hottest lesbians from the US South for a night to remember.

That’s it for now, but be sure to check out the photos linked below and stay tuned for upcoming photos from some of the various events we attended this weekend, all going up online and being brought to you here on this blog in the coming days.

As part of our business-to-business outreach in the GLBT travel world, we made sure not to miss the IGLTA Convention in Toronto this past week, May 7-10. The convention itself was a huge success, and on a personal note, it was the first time I was in Toronto, and as all Canadian cities, the warm welcome from the people I met was much appreciated.

There was so much that went on, including a conference workshop I presented with some of our gay travel colleagues related to working with a company such as Travelocity in GLBT initiatives. Overall, it is great to see that in these economic times, there are still many companies holding strong to their LGBT initiatives… it is great to see the support of companies for this important travel segment.

Highlights from the convention are many. For one, our friends at LogoOnline have come a long way, which they made clear by sponsoring and hosting the VIP Sponsors reception. Their advertising video they showed us all reminded us that Logo is definitely a company that creates a quality product and, being part of MTV Networks, gets quality television programming!

It was also great to see such companies as Out Adventure and Gay Cities making great strides and inroads, as well as to hear of the new developments at Regent Media with their new travel books. As always it is great to see Alan Beck and Rodney at Fun Maps, it would never be the same conference if they were not in attendance. Kudos to the IGLTA staff for putting on a great conference, John, Tom, Richard, Carlos and Devin were outstanding. It will be exciting to see the new board in action. There is a tremendous amount of talent amongst them, and I am confident they will take IGLTA to new levels.
